FIA WEC Qualifying Format To Change

The World Motorsport Council has approved a change to the Qualifying format for the WEC with the current arrangement of the fastest single lap in a 20 minute qualifying session replaced by a format designed to “make it more attractive for spectators and media.”

From 2013, two drivers must establish two lap times each and the average of the four lap times will be the reference time for establishing the starting grid. That format was seen recently in A1 GP (albeit with just a single driver of course).

In addition the race morning warm-up sessions have been cancelled, “except specifically where required by some events.”
