There has been upheaval galore on the potential plans for the revival of the Alpine brand for road cars but the parent company is about to launch a new Renault branded sportscar, at least initially, into motorsport.
The new Renault R.S. 01 ‘does an Audi’ taking the moniker of one of the brands iconic racers, in this instance the F1 car that campaigned from 1977 to 1979, introducing the turbocharged era in a whirl of massive horsepower, massive lag and massive unreliability! It was though a pioneer and it’s 21st century cousin might just herald another new beginning.
For now though the new car is set to provide a one-make replacement for the silhouette Megane Trophy racer on the support bill for the 2015 World Series by Renault.
It was the Megane racer that provided the underpinnings for the Alpine A110-50 concept (above), and the teaser shots (and video) so far seen of the new Renault make it look like a not dissimilar beast.
That may well not be the case mechanically though, reports suggest a very different powerplant, potentially involving some input from the NISMO arm of sister company Nissan.
The car is due to be revealed officially later this month with no information yet available about roadgoing, or indeed other race applications for the platform.
