The 1955 Le Mans Disaster, 60 Years On

June 11 2015 sees the 60th anniversary of the world’s worst motorsport accident when Pierre Levegh’s Mercedes Benz crashed into the spectator enclosure on the start finish straight during the 1955 Le Mans 24 Hours killing 83 spectators and injuring over 120.

To mark the anniversary the ACO invited members of the families of some of those who perished to attend a rededication of the plaque which is mounted on the inner wall of the start finish straight.

The ceremony was also attended by senior members of the ACO’s management and, very appropriately by several marshals and emergency response workers, whose predecessors did much to assist the injured and dying on that dreadful day

The plaque was placed back in its permanent position after the rededication.
