An engineering mock-up for the new-for-2017 Gibson LMP2 V8 engine was displayed for the very first time at the ACO press conference yesterday and Gibson’s service truck, parked just outside the working paddock this year, is proudly displaying their newest product on the tailgate – and it was attracting plenty of interest from passing fans too.
Gibson’s John Manchester was upbeat about prospects for the new-look FIA WEC/ELMS LMP2 which features a choice of four different chassis (Dallara, Onroak (Ligier), Oreca, Riley-Multimatic) and the spec Gibson engine, with c.600 bhp, is over 100 bhp up on the current LMP2 units.
“We are well on track for the first engines to be produced (each chassis manufacturer will receive a first development Gibson in mid-August) and we committed to an initial production batch of 20.
“Interest though has been very high – and we have committed already to a second batch of a further 20.”
That’s a very encouraging sign for the future of the class.
