After winning a pair Paralympic Gold medals at Rio last month, Alex Zanardi was back to winning ways at the Italian GT season finale, taking a win on Sunday in Race 2 at Mugello following a sixth place finish in Saturday’s race.
The weekend was Zanardi’s first driving the BMW M6 GT3, after the 49-year-old Italian took part in the 2015 Spa 24 Hours and Blancpain Sprint Series in a Z4 GT3 before focusing primarily on his Olympic goals in hand cycling.
“There are no words to describe what I feel,” Zanardi, who was driving with ROAL Motorsports at the event, added. “Today I saw the sun setting and it never looked that beautiful. What a year, not only what a day.
“Once more I enjoyed beautiful moments in Rio de Janeiro, and now just jumping into this beautiful car was amazing. But to win the race is something else.
“It is unbelievable. I want to thank all the guys in Munich, who did an amazing effort in getting this beautiful BMW M6 GT3 ready for me with everything I needed.”
