Mat Fernandez has been busy reading the European media and has found a pair of interesting stories surrounding a pair of Italian racing legends.
Valentino Rossi was recently interviewed by Belgian newspaper “La Meuse” Interview can be read here
When asked whether he would like to compete in the Dakar rally, the Italian Moto GP star replied:
“The Dakar ? Yes, maybe. One day, when my time in Moto GP is over. I have not determined when that would be. This would be a great challenge for me so, yes that is the kind of thing I would be interested in. But I think it must be very hard.
“To be honest, I think it would make more sense to think about the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It’s easier (he laughs). I want to drive on this superb track of Spa Francorchamps. I will do that for sure. The 24 Hours of Spa Francorchamps, the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring and the 24 Hours of Le Mans are races I want to drive in one day.”
That looks set to be a storyline we will read (and write!) more than once in the coming years!
Compatriot Alessandro Zanardi meanwhile has been interviewed by Autosprint magazine and comes up with the following response to a question about possible future races for BMW:
“For now there is nothing certain, but certainly something will come. I am a proud BMW ambassador, yet I feel the urge to show I am also driver of the German House, and I do not want to let slip the opportunity to prove it, as soon as possible.
“From this point of view there is nothing decided yet, but I think something interesting will mature again. At Le Mans? I don’t know for now. I can only say that I like 24 hours, although the Gran Turismo, ie cars with whom I could compete, they run along with prototypes, without any hope of overall victory. Think about how fantastic it would be to race one week with prototype protagonists and the week after with the GT scene, into two separate competitions that both determine an absolute winner. It would be a tremendous thing, Anyway, back to reality, whatever happens, it will be with BMW. Where and how, we will see.”
