German outfit GTronix Team mcchip-dkr is set to run a Renault R.S.01 in the SPX class of the 2017 Nürburgring 24 Hours, and in rounds of the VLN series. The appearance will mark the French car’s debut in the race.
The team will be supported by Renault Sport and Pirelli for the programme, with drivers Heiko Hammel, a DTC Series runner, and VLN-regular Dieter Schmidtmann confirmed to share the cockpit. The other drivers who will take part in the programme will be announced soon.
This project has been in the works since late last year, with the team having to make several in-house modifications to its R.S.01 to ensure it’s eligible to race in SPX.
Prior to its Nordschleife debut the has already been out testing. Last week it traveled to the Misano Circuit in Italy for a shakedown and some early developmental running.
The car, which in the past year has been used in several long-distance 24H Series races and the Gulf 12 Hours, is unable to race in the N24’s SP9 class as it isn’t a fully homologated FIA GT3 car.
No details have been shared yet regarding the extent of its VLN commitments.
