DragonSpeed 1-2 Again In FP2

Spirit of Race sets the GTE pace

Nicolas Lapierre continued to set the ultimate pace this weekend, by setting the fastest lap of the second ELMS practice session in the #21 Dragonspeed Oreca 07 – a 1:19.082. The lap was a 1.3 second improvement on the one he clocked yesterday in FP1.

Léo Roussel meanwhile, set multiple fast laps towards the end of the session, to vault DragonSpeed’s #22 G-Drive Racing Oreca 07 from fifth to second. His best tour was a 1:19.492, some four tenths behind the #21 but 1.4 seconds faster than the car’s best time set yesterday.

The first Ligier was third overall, with the #32 United Autosports JS P217 driven by Filipe Albuquerque 0.7 seconds further adrift from the leading Oreca after a 1:19.811.

The top five was completed by the #28 IDEC Ligier and #39 GRAFF ORECA.

Meanwhile in the LMP3 category, Mikkel Jensen in the #9 AT Racing Ligier JSP3 went quickest very early in the session with a 1:26.507. It was two tenths slower than the fastest lap set yesterday in the first free practice session by an LMP3.

In the final minutes of the session, Simon Gachet in the #16 Panis Barthez Competition Ligier JSP3 took second position with a 1:26.639, nearly two tenths ahead of the #10 Oregon Team Norma M30 driven by Davide Roda and Andres Mendez.

The session was packed with incidents caused by LMP3 drivers. Less than 15 minutes after the green flag, the #18 YMR Ligier JSP3 went into the gravel at Turn 7 while at the same time, the #3 United Autosports Ligier JSP3 driven by Christian England had an accident and significantly damaged its front bodywork (below).

Despite the damage sustained from the incident, the team has confirmed to DSC that the car will take part in Qualifying later today.

The #13 Inter Europol Competition Ligier JSP3 lost rear bodywork parts on the track too, moments later. Then in the final half hour of the session, the #9 AT Racing Ligier JSP3 went through a gravel bed at Turn 7 and the #10 Oregon Team Norma M30 driven by Davide Roda spun at Turn 1 and stopped on track.

Finally in the LMGTE category, Andrea Bertolini in the #51 Spirit of Race Ferrari F488 GTE set the class’ fastest lap, the Italian reeling off a 1:28.407 in the final moments of the session. The #77 Proton Competition Porsche 911 RSR shared by Christian Ried, Joel Camathias and Matteo Caroli – which topped FP1 – finished second, some three tenths behind the lead 488 GTE.

Third was the #99 Beachdean AMR Aston Martin V8 Vantage, with a fastest lap of 1:28.814 set by Darren Turner.

Next up for the ELMS runners is this afternoon’s Qualifying session starting at 13.45, local time.
