Toyota Finds Pace In Final 6H Mexico Free Practice

Tight at the top in LMP2

Toyota Gazoo Racing responded to Porsche finishing 1-2 in both Free Practice 1 and Free Practice 2 in the final session before Qualifying at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, by going fastest.

Sebastien Buemi ended with the best time of the session in the #8 TS050 HYBRID, a 1:25.789, which initially wasn’t fast enough to put the team to the top, but the No. 1 Porsche had its fastest lap deleted for speeding in the pit lane at the end.

It meant that the #1 ended the session second overall, and 0.194 off, the best time coming from Nick Tandy.

Third, was the #7 Toyota ended up a fraction slower with a 1:26.069, ahead of the #2 Porsche that was last of the factory hybrids.

In LMP2, it was the #37 Jackie Chan DC Racing ORECA which claimed the top spot, Alex Brundle lapping the circuit in 1:33.150, to put himself and the Chinese-flagged team just 0.014 faster than the Signatech Alpine which had Nicolas Lappiere set its best time.

Third was the G-Drive Racing ORECA, Alex Lynn again going quickest in the car with a 1:33.150, remarkably, just 0.006 off the Alpine.

GTE Pro was paced by AF Corse once again after topping FP1, with Sam Bird this time in the #71 Ferrari 488 bettering the rest of the field with a 1:39.722.

The Britain’s time was just under two tenths faster than the #66 Ford Chip Ganassi UK GT of Stefan Mucke in second and the #92 Porsche of Kevin Estre that finished the session third.

In Am, Ben Barker dethroned Matteo Cairoli at the top with a 1:41.069 in the Gulf Racing UK Porsche to go top, pushing FP1 and 2 pacesetter Cairoli in the Dempsey Proton 911 RSR to second by just five thousandths of a second. Clearwater managed to take up third place.

Qualifying at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez for the FIA WEC runners is set to start 17:50 local time.
