Nielsen Racing will enter three cars in the Henderson Insurance Brokers LMP3 Cup Championship at Donington Park on September 16/17, further boosting entries for the season finale.
Khaled Al Mudhaf and Michael Vergers will join the team to make their debuts in the LMP3 Cup Championship. Kuwaiti-based Al Mudhaf has a wide range of experience competing in GT and prototypes, including an impressive Pro-Am victory in the Dubai 24 Hours in 2014.
He will be joined by Dutchman Vergers, who lists winning the 2006 LMP2 category in the Le Mans Series as part of an impressive racing resume. In recent years he’s focused on driver coaching but has returned to the track this year. He also holds the production lap record at the fabled Nurburgring Nordschelife, setting a time of 6:48.28 in a Radical SR8 LM.
Neilsen has entered a Ligier JS P3 alongside Ecurie Ecosse for the entire season, helping Alasdair McCaig and Colin Noble to become the first champions of the series. It has also run its own car for over half of the year, with Jason Rishover, Jamie Spence, Dean Gibbs, and Alex Kapadia featuring behind the wheel.
Rishover and Spence will once again team up in the #23 machine, looking to emulate their podium finish at Donington Park for the first race of the season in April. McCaig and Noble secured two victories that weekend, helping propel them to the title, and will surely want to end a successful season on a high.
The inaugural Henderson Insurance Brokers LMP3 Cup season has so far competed over 10 races across the United Kingdom, with a trip to the famous Spa-Francorchamps in June, and will conclude at Donington Park. The championship is fully endorsed by the Automobile Club de l’Ouest [ACO], for homologated LMP3 cars, providing a clear pathway to drivers wishing to race at Le Mans.
David Thompson, Team Manager, Nielsen Racing: “I’m pleased we have pulled together this deal to run three cars at the final round of the Henderson Insurance LMP3 Cup Championship. It’s good that the number of cars on the grid for Donington is looking promising, the championship is a great platform for LMP3 racing in the UK and hopefully this will continue into next year. We may have already won the championship with Colin and Alasdair, but we will still be pushing to continue our winning streak and keep up our run of podiums this year.”
The final round of the inaugural Henderson Insurance Brokers LMP3 Cup Championship is at Donington Park on September 16/17 with a one-hour race on each day. Tickets are priced at £17 per day, £30 for the weekend, and children under the age of 13 go free with a paying adult.
