Porsche LMP Team’s Earl Bamber topped the charts at the end of Free Practice 1 at the FIA WEC Six Hours of Circuit of The Americas. Bamber set a 1:48.124, leading their teammates in the #1 Porsche, who set a quickest time of 1:48.269, and both of the Toyota Gazoo Racing TSO50s.
The #8 Toyota was closest to the leading two Porsches with Sebastien Buemi managing a 1:48.584, just three tenths of a second off of the #1 Porsche. Meanwhile, the #7, managed to clock in a 1.49:314 to round out the LMP1 class from Austin.
In LMP2 the G-Drive Racing ORECA with Alex Lynn behind the wheel finished top of the charts, the Brit setting a time of 1.55:399, about five tenths of a second clear of the #28 TDS Racing Oreca which finished with a 1.55:708 from Matthieu Vaxiviere.
Rounding out the top three in class was the #36 Singatech Alpine A470, which slotted in third after a 1:56.034 from American racer Gustavo Menezes.
GTE Pro ended with both of the Ford’s leading the class, rebounding from a weekend in Mexico that Harry Tincknell referred to as “damage control.” The #66 Ford GT led the sister #67, the two cars setting times of 2:04.939 and 2:05.213 respectively.
Next in class were the two Ferraris from AF Corse, with the #51 getting the best of the #71 thanks to a 2:05.594 from Alessandro Pier Guidi.
The most notable news from GTE Pro came from Porsche who’s #92 911 RSR set just 12 laps after missing nearly an hour after the team was forced to change engines within the session, a feat that was only possible thanks to the design of this year’s car. The #91 wound up sixth fastest in class thanks to a 2:06.272 from Michael Christensen.
Finally in GTE Am the #98 Aston Martin Racing Vantage went quickest with a 2:06.989 from Pedro Lamy, the only time in GTE AM under the two minutes and seven second mark. The classes two Porsches were second and third with the championship leading Dempsy-Proton car clocking in a 2:07.371 to go second.
Rounding out the top three in GTE AM was the #86 Gulf Racing Porsche with a 2:07.664 from Ben Barker.
