Motoaki Ishikawa has confirmed on Facebook that Japanese team MR Racing will file an entry for the 2018/19 FIA WEC ‘Super Season’ in GTE Am, with an AF Corse-run Ferrari 488 GTE.
This is the first confirmation that the programme will happen, after Ishikawa tested a 488 GTE at the end-of-season Bahrain test this year with Olivier Beretta (below).
The post confirms that Ishikawa will race with veteran GT driver Beretta (who has 21 Le Mans starts) and Eddie Cheever III (son of three-time Le Mans starter & ex-F1 driver Eddie Cheever).
Beretta and Ishikawa have previous experience racing together in Blancpain, while Cheever, born in Rome, Italy, has high-level GT experience racing with Spirit of Race in IMSA’s GTD class.
It is however, not guaranteed that the MR team will gain an entry. With GTE Am set to be oversubscribed next year, the selection committee may have to turn some teams away. The aim from the committee is to balance the GTE and LMP cars across the four classes.
It’s known that both 2017 WEC GTE Am Ferrari crews – Spirit of Race and Clearwater Racing – are set to file entries to return for the ‘Super Season’ with AF Corse.
