Mike Conway emerged fastest in the final Free Practice session at Daytona today, the Toyota factory driver setting a 1:36.865 in the Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi.
The Britain’s time was just 0.181 quicker than the rest of the field, in what turned out to be yet another close session at the top.
Second in the rankings was the #37 Jackie Chan DC Racing Oreca, Lance Stroll setting the crew’s fastest time, a 1:37.046. Making it two Cadillacs in the top three was Tristan Vautier, putting the Spirit of Daytona DPi. V.R third with a 1:37.118.
Just missing out on the leading trio was the #77 Mazda, which managed an encouraging 1:37.178 following its engine change last night. The sister car meanwhile, didn’t head out; the #54 CORE autosport ORECA crew sat out the session too, the only other car in the field which didn’t turn a wheel.
The only notable drama from the Prototype runners out on track concerned the #32 United Autosports Ligier, which suffered a right-rear blowout. Aside from that though, it was a clean session.
In GTLM, Ford was once again fastest, the #66 again topping the screens with a 1:44.062 from Joey Hand. Porsche’s two 911 RSRs ended up second and third, the #912 leading the #911 which claimed third at the very end. Fastest of the six Porsche drivers was Gianmaria Bruni, who reeled off a 1:44.119.
Porsche also ran fast in GTD, Manthey Racing’s #59 911 GT3 R topping the times courtesy of Matteo Cairoli who toured the speedway in 1:46.905. The Riley Motorsports Mercedes and Wright Motorsports Porsche slotted in second and third.
The 2018 Rolex 24 Hours is set to begin tomorrow at 14:40 local time in Florida.
