With the weather still poor trackside at Paul Ricard, the 2018 Le Mans Cup season got underway, under grey clouds and drizzle. The fastest car during the hour-long session was the CD Sport Norma M30. German driver Laurents Horr set the car’s time, a 2:00.451, half a second quicker than the rest of the field.
Second in the LMP3 ranks meanwhile, was the DB Autosport Norma, a further eight tenths up on the #2 Ecurie Ecosse Ligier JS P3 which finished up third.
In GT3, AF Corse’s #71 Ferrari ended up on top, Marco Cioci setting the best time, a 2:00.451, almost three tenths up on the rest of the field. The car’s morning ended in the barriers though, Piergiuseppe Perazzini bringing out red flags seven minutes before the end of the session. DSC saw the car come back to the paddock though, with very minor damage.
The #79 Ecurie Ecosse Liguer also hit trouble at the end of the session, the car suffering a gearbox temperature issue and stopping on track with Alasdair McCaig at the wheel.
Completing the top three in the GT ranks was the #51 Spirit of Race 488 ahead of the #8 Kessel example. The top five in the class were in fact all Ferrari 488s, the Ebimotors Porsche ending up sixth. The sole Ferrari 458 in the field, entered by StileF Squadra Corse, didn’t set a time, the SVC Lamborghini Huracan meanwhile, didn’t even feature on the list, despite taking part in testing as a late entry on Wednesday.
The second Free Practice for the Michelin Le Mans Cup runners is set for 15:20 local time this afternoon.
