The LMP3 Cup Championship has added a new Invitational class for the final two rounds of the 2018 championship at Donington Park and Silverstone, in an attempt to boost its grid size.
In the new class, championship organiser Bute Motorsport will allow PT4, Group CN, Prototype and Radical cars to join its current field of LMP3s. Bute states that this is a precursor to next year, as “dedicated groups” for these other cars are due to be launched for the 2019 season.
Earlier this season, the LMP3 Cup Championship ran with multiple classes at Donington Park, when United Autosports raced with a brand new Ligier JS P4, in what was the Onroak-car’s global race debut.
This change in the structure for the series comes in the midst of a season which has seen the number of entries drop to just a handful of cars. Despite this, Bute Motorsport is clearly still serious to build a stable championship, with what is already a strong calendar, for the future.
