Supercars.com has reported that seven-time champion Jamie Whincup is set to compete in the penultimate round of the 2018 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship at Laguna Seca.
Whincup will race with SunEnergy1 Racing in its GTD class Mercedes AMG GT3 after US-based Australian Kenny Habul gave him the call-up.
“I’ve never been to Laguna Seca,” Whincup told Supercars.com. “I’ve watched Champ Car there for many years, back when I was a kid and just really want to experience the Corkscrew, to be honest.
“The opportunity came up and I jumped at it. It should be good fun.
“Kenny sent me an email and I thought ‘gee, this might be a good one to do’, so I put my hand up,” he said. “I’ve got no plans, there’s nothing more to it than it came up as the right thing at the right time and I grabbed it with two hands.”
The drive adds to Whincup’s packed Supercars calendar, as he will fly from California back to Australia soon after the race for the Supercars race at Sandown International Motor Raceway the following weekend. Porsche GT Team driver Earl Bamber will also make the quick turn around, as he’s scheduled to drive at Sandown with Shane van Gisbergen.
This will be the second time this year that Whincup has driven with SunEnergy1, after he competed at the 2018 Bathurst 12 Hour with the team and drivers Habul, Raffaele Marciello and Tristan Vautier (featured).
