Porsche Returns To British GT’s GT3 Ranks With G-Cat Racing

New 911 GT3 R to take on the season

This year, for the first time since 2015, a GT3 Porsche will be on the grid in the British GT Championship.

G-Cat Racing has announced that it will debut the new 911 GT3 R in the UK this season, with a full-season programme for Shamus Jennings and team owner Greg Caton (an Amateur line-up). The team’s example, according to the series, is the first 2019-spec 911 GT3 R in the UK.

The team moves into British GT after years spent racing in Porsche Carerra Cup GB, the team winning the Pro-Am2 title in 2017 with Jennings.

The last time a Porsche raced in the UK championships GT3 ranks was at the Silverstone round in 2015 when stalwart team Trackspeed raced with David Ashburn and Norbert Siedler (below).

Despite Porsche’s absence from British GT’s top class, it is still the winningest constructor in championship history, with a record 156 class wins since 1993.

“British GT represents an exciting next step for G-Cat Racing, and doing so with Porsche makes it even more special,” said Caton.

“We have an excellent relationship with Porsche from our time in the Carrera Cup and their latest evolution of the 911 GT3 R is a fantastic piece of engineering. The high standard is exactly what we’ve come to expect from Porsche and coupled with their first-rate customer support we couldn’t be happier to be entering into this venture with one of their cars.

“This year will be a learning curve for Shamus, myself and the team, but once we get some mileage under our belts with the car we are confident the results will follow.”

As it stands, British GT’s GT3 class features seven marques in for the full season, while GT4 (following yesterday’s news of a Porsche Cayman GT4 joining the grid) currently features eight. Only one of the seven GT3 models confirmed, the Mercedes AMG GT3, has raced in British GT full time in the past.

This year’s full-season entry list will be revealed during the championship’s pre-season Media Day at Donington Park on March 5.
