2020 ‘Hypercar’ Regulations Expanded To Include Road Car Derivatives

OEM pressure forces substantial changes to 'Hypercar' proposals.

The FIA World Motorsport Council, at its meeting in Geneva, has approved an updated to the 2020 LMP1 Technical Regulations.

As an addition to the regulations approved on 5 December 2018, the following update to the regulations has now been approved:

“Expansion of the 2020 LMP Technical Regulations concept to allow a “Hypercar” developed from the road cars sold by the manufacturers to enter, while preserving the previously-approved regulatory format.

“This expansion is designed to enable additional manufacturers to enter the championship.”

The addition is understood to have been informed by input from a number of manufacturers in the Technical Working Groups developing the final regulations, in response to both budgetary, and platform availability concerns.

An update in detail is expected to be released during the Sebring race meeting next week.
