Project 1 Porsche In “Significant” Sebring Test Fire

Driver unhurt, GTE Am Championship-leading 911 RSR reported as destroyed

Reports from paddock sources at Sebring International Raceway today suggest that the #56 Project 1 Porsche 911 RSR, current Championship leader in the GTE AM class of the 2018/19 FIA World Endurance Championship, has been destroyed in a fire that occurred during the second day of official testing prior to next weekend’s 1000 Miles of Sebring.

The same sources report that the car suffered a fire at the rear of the car, Joerg Bergmeister able to escape unhurt, but that the first responders on scene were unable to prevent the fire from engulfing the whole car, one source who witnessed the scene suggesting that the Porsche had “basically burned to the ground!”

The test session has resumed after the wreckage was removed.

Project 1 is expecting delivery of a second 911 RSR in time for their already announced ELMS campaign, with a car apiece dedicated to ELMS in 2019 and in FIA WEC for this season and the next.

A further report just received confirmed that the damage is extensive, the team are now working with Porsche to source a replacement chassis in time to compete next week.
