Thiim, O’Brien Fastest In Spa FP2

Rain arrives ahead of qualifying

Nicki Thiim was again fastest in free practice, in the second session of Saturday for British GT’s visit to Spa-Francorchamps. The Dane was fractionally faster than his FP1 benchmark, going around in 2:20.819 this time.

Second-quickest was Seb Morris in the #31 JRM Bentley, clocking a 2:21.185, ahead of Phil Keen in the championship-leading #72 Barwell Lamborghini, on a 2:22.463.

Next up was Ben Green in the #3 Century BMW, setting a 2:22.5 to better his team-mate Jack Mitchell’s 2:22.6 in the sister #9 M6. Bradley Ellis wrapped up the top six in the #96 Optimum Motorsport Aston, back up and running after its dramatic pitlane fire at Donington.

In GT4, fastest this time around was Michael O’Brien in the #20 Balfe McLaren shared with Graham Johnson, with a time of 2:33.110. FP1 pacesetter Tom Canning was second this time around in the #97 TF Sport Aston, setting a 2:33.243.

Mikey Broadhurst set the third-fastest GT4 lap (a 2:33.110) in the #77 Fox Motorsport Mercedes ahead of Patrick Kibble in the #95 TF Sport Aston, who managed a 2:33.661.

‘Fresh-faced rookie’ Andy Priaulx was fifth-fastest in GT4 on his first outing in the #19 Multimatic Mustang, clocking a 2:33.732 to go two places better than his son Seb, who finished the session seventh-fastest.

Between them was Martin Plowman, sixth-fastest in the #11 Beechdean Aston on a 2:33.843.

The clouds grew increasingly darker during the course of this session and by the time the next session (the first British F3 race of the weekend) got underway, rain had begun to fall around the track.

Qualifying follows at 3:10pm local time.
