59Racing Name Pro Trio For Bathurst McLaren Attack

Parente, Barnicoat and Blomqvist for Pro class 720S GT3

The entry list for the 2020 Bathurst 12 Hour sees a pair of McLaren 720S GT3s fielded by Aussie team 59Racing.

he team has, this evening, confirmed the All-Pro trio for the lead McLaren with the Silver class entry due to be revealed tomorrow.

The trio is led by returning 2016 overall winner Alvaro Parente, the Portuguese star joined in the 720S GT3 by McLaren factory driver Ben Barnicoat, and recently ex BMW factory man Tom Blomqvist.

Parente will be looking to add a second Bathurst win to his cv alongside overall honours with McLaren in the Pirelli World Challenge.

Barnicoat meanwhile will be tackling his second race down under in a matter of weeks after forming part of the Thunderhead by Carlin squad in the Asian Le Mans Series event earlier this month at the Bend. He too has contested the 12 Hour for McLaren before.

Completing the roster is British racer Tom Blomqvist, who finished second in the 2014 Formula 3 European Championship before competing in DTM for three years and then moving on to a successful spell with BMW’s GT racing effort including a win in the Spa 24 Hours in 2018 with Walkenhorst Motorsport.

Alvaro Parente: “Bathurst is a great track with a lot of happy memories for me, so to be able to go back there with McLaren and 59Racing is very exciting.”

“There are a lot of familiar faces in the team, so I am very confident heading into the race that we can do a good job.”

Ben Barnicoat: “A huge thanks goes to 59Racing for the opportunity to race at Mount Panorama. It’s one of those bucket list circuits in world motorsport, so I’m really looking forward to driving the McLaren 720S GT3 around there.

“It’s even more exciting that it’s the first year the car has raced there, so there will be some learning to do but we know the car and team are up to the task.

“It’s been a few years since I’ve raced there, and I can’t wait to get back.”

Tom Blomqvist: “I am very much looking forward to joining 59Racing at Bathurst and driving the McLaren 720S.

“Having never raced at Bathurst before it looks like a very challenging circuit, but I have some great co-drivers that I’m sure will help me. I’m looking forward to racing with the Alvaro, Ben, and the whole team.
