JMW Motorsport will add the team’s first international T3 programme to their 2020 schedule with the announcement this morning that the ELMS and Le Mans 24 Hours regulars are set to field a Bentley Continental GT3 in GT World Challenge Asia Powered by AWS.
The team will race in the Pro/AM class with ex Bentley factory driver Andy Meyrick and Andrew Haryanto.
The effort will be the first time that Bentley has been represented in the Series since 2018 and confirms a Bentley presence in all three World Challenge championships (Europe, North America and now Asia).
Haryanto gears up for his first full season in Asia’s biggest GT series after finishing second in 2017’s Am Cup standings and making several appearances in ’19.
Meyrick will be making his first season effort on the continent since making selected GT Asia outings aboard Bentley’s previous-generation model in 2015.
“When I first raced in sportscars back in 2009 I saw JMW Motorsport in the Le Mans Series paddock and always aspired to race for them,” said Meyrick. “Over the following 10 years, I had a career that saw me race an LMP1 for Aston Martin at Le Mans, tackle the biggest endurance races in the USA, compete as a Bentley works team driver at the highest level of GT3 racing and much, much more. It’s incredible that after all of this, I’ll finally race with JMW Motorsport, who have gone on to achieve so much as a team.
“I’m looking forward to taking the Bentley brand to Asia and showing what the Continental GT3 is capable of, I know Andrew is up for the challenge and I’m sure he’ll be a fantastic team-mate both on- and off-track.
“Racing in Sepang and Shanghai back in 2015 were incredible experiences and I’ve always wanted to go back,” said Meyrick. “Racing new tracks are going to be a welcome challenge and I look forward to it.
“I have been watching Jim and JMW since I first got into the sportscar paddock in 2009 and I have seen them prove time and again that they are a very professional and well-run outfit. I’ve got a wonderful teammate in Andrew as he’s a proven front runner in GT Asia. It’s going to be a very exciting year for all of us, and obviously I’m delighted to be behind the wheel of the Bentley once again.”
“I’m thrilled with this new partnership”, said Jim McWhirter. “Our involvement with Bentley and the GT World Challenge Asia is an expansion for the JMW Motorsport name. Having Andy Meyrick onboard will be a real asset. He is extremely experienced, and he knows the cars well.”
Bentley’s Director of Motorsport, Paul Williams, added: “Having Continental GT3s capable of winning races in GT World Challenge Asia has been top of our priorities list for a while and, with JMW Motorsport, we believe we have this in place. There will now be a Bentley present in each of the GT World Challenge series making it a truly global customer motorsport programme.”
