4 Hours of Sepang: Free Practice 2, Cassidy Fastest After Further Downpour

Grist fastest in LMP3, Ledogar grabs bragging rights in GT

A heavy downpour mid-session of the session under the floodlights saw some minor dramas for a number of runners with several off-track moments as the grip disappeared!

There had been dramas at the start of the 90-minute session for the #34 Inter-Europol Ligier as the left rear wheel detached on the car’s out-lap, a red flag needed for recovery of the car, and a trip to the stewards after crew members reportedly attended the car before it was fully recovered – the Ligier would rejoin the session rather later but penalties are looming.

Early in the session, the top slots went the way of Roman Rusinov in the #26 G-Drive by Algarve Pro Aurus, Garett Grist in the #3 Nielsen Norma and Davide Rigon in the #27 HubAuto Ferrari with Cody Ware and Anthony Lazarro duelling for LMP2 AM honours and with the rain intervening those times held sway almost to the end of the session.

As the track dried out though the orders began to shuffle, LMP3 saw both Graff Normas close in on, but not better, Grist’s earlier mark, 2:00.899.

In GT there were more significant shuffling as the top teams went through some qualifying simulations, Ross Gunn popped up to fourth in the final moments in the #77 D’Station Aston Martin but had no immediate answer for the three Evo Ferraris (the #51 car having reverted to earlier spec after gearbox damage in testing earlier in the week).

Top of the shop briefly was Rio Haryanto in the #75 T2 Motorsports car, but his 2:05.023 was almost immediately bettered by Come Ledogar, his 2:04.891 would top the times with the #7 Car Guy Ferrari.

And there would be action in LMP2 as well as qualifying simulation work stared on the by now almost entirely dry track.

There were time improvements from almost all the runners in class, including the by now back on track #34 but the team making a splash were Eurasia Motorsport.

Nick Cassidy blasted out the best lap of the session with a 1:51.950 in the #1 New Zealand Racing Ligier with Nick Foster following up to make it a Eurasia one-two with a 1:53.384 at the end of the session.
