The 2020 Autobacs Super GT Series will not visit Chang International Circuit in Buriram, Thailand this season, the GT Association (GTA) has announced.
A statement released by the GTA says: “The decision has been made in extensive consultation with the promoters in Thailand to cancel this season’s Thailand Round due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and related societal conditions, and based on a top priority placed on preventing risk of infection by the teams and related staff involved.”
Buriram now joins Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia, and Japanese venues Okayama International Circuit, Sportsland Sugo, and Autopolis in having their proposed Super GT rounds cancelled for 2020 in the aftermath of the Coronavirus pandemic.
The Thai circuit was a potential candidate to host the 2020 Super GT finale when the series’ revised calendar was released on Thursday. The event would have taken place over Christmas weekend, with the race on 27 December.
Instead, the season will end on the weekend of 28-29 November at Fuji Speedway, one of four visits to the circuit that the series will make in 2020 – the others, as announced previously, on 19 July to open the season, 9 August for Round 2, and 4 October for Round 5. Suzuka Circuit will host Rounds 3 and 6, on 23 August and 25 October respectively. Twin Ring Motegi will host the fourth and seventh rounds, on 13 September and 8 November.
No event formats have yet been determined.
