Nurburgring 24 Hours To Go Ahead In June: Decision On Fan Attendance To Come Later

All 2020 tickets to be refunded, qualification race also set to go ahead

The 2021  ADAC TOTAL 24 Hours of the Nurburgring will go ahead, as planned on 3-6 June after support was received from a number of race partners to underwrite the costs of holding the event.

A decision on spectator attendance will be made at a later date with the decision also now made to refund all tickets sold for the 2020 event which was, to a very large degree, behind closed doors.

Nürburgring 1927 GmbH & Co KG holding company is making a financial contribution together with Audi, BMW, Mercedes-AMG and Porsche as well as tyre manufacturers Falken, Goodyear and Michelin,  also contributing considerable sums to securing the race.

On the part of the marketing partners, Sporttotal as the holder of the 24-hour rights and Eurosport Events as the promoter of the FIA WTCR has made important contributions too with Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus also contributing to the funding pot

The ADAC 24h qualification race on 8-9 May should also take place as planned.

“Of course we had hoped that we would overcome the Corona by June 2021 and that we would be able to organize the 24-hour race in its old glory,” summarizes race director Walter Hornung.

“Now things will turn out very differently, and the race will be for us an even greater effort than in the previous year. ”In view of the pandemic situation, it is currently not foreseeable whether and, if so, to what extent viewers can be admitted.

“That hurts us several times, of course. On the one hand, we clearly lack the income as an important component of the budget. In addition, of course, our fans contribute to the inimitable atmosphere of the 24-hour race, and we missed that badly last year.

”Nevertheless, those in charge at ADAC Nordrhein see that the event is important – in some cases even existential – for a lot of people.

“For many teams, suppliers and also at the racetrack itself, jobs also depend on the 24-hour race, that is why we really pulled out all the stops to secure the implementation.”

Postponing the 24-hour race was ruled out of the question as the most obvious alternative. Because in the 2021 season, August and September are already packed with clashes with other events.
