Toyotas Top The Times In FP1, But Gaps Are Small To Alpine & SCG

United top LMP2, Ferrari in GTE Pro, Project 1 Porsche in GTE Am

The first 90-minute Free Practice session ahead of Sunday’s 6 Hours of Monza saw the pair of factory Toyota GR010s top the times with all five Hypercars posting times within half a second of each other.

The session, which saw light rain in the final minutes saw a brief interruption with a Red Flag for the recovery of the #47 Cetilar Racing Ferrari.

Top of the shop was the #7 Toyota Gazoo Racing car, a 1:38.401 for Jose Maria Lopez, edging out the sister #8 car by just over a tenth of a second, Brendon Hartley the fastest of that crew in the session.

Third fastest was the #36 Alpine, Nicolas Lapierre under two-hundredths shy of the second Toyota with the pair of Glickenhaus 007s posting almost identical times in the 1:39.0s, the #709 losing time in the session after a problem for Richard Westbrook saw a Full Course Yellow called as the car made it’s way back to the pit lane.

LMP2 saw an early session effort from Filipe Albuquerque put the #22 United Autosport’s Oreca on top of the times – 1:39.373 from the Portuguese driver would see the best of the rest, Nyck de Vries in the #29 Racing Team Nederland car, almost half a second back.

Ben Hanley (#21 Dragonspeed) and Ferdinand Habsburg (#31 Team WRT) were next up.

GTE Pro saw the Ferraris top the times on home ground, Miguel Molina’s 1:46.329 in the #52 AF Corse 488 GTE Evo almost four-tenths up on the sister #51 car of Alessandro Pier Guidi.

The #92 Porsche (Neel Jani) was a further couple of tenths off with the #91 a further tenth back in the hands of Richard Lietz.

In contrast, the stacked GTE Am class was headed by a Porsche, Riccardo Pera in the #56 Project 1 Porsche 911 RSR-19 with a 1:47.194 a couple of tenths up on Giancarlo Fisichella in the #54 AF Corse Ferrari with Matteo Cressoni third fastest, a further tenth back in the #60 Iron Lynx Ferrari.

Andrew Watson made it all three marques in the top four with a 1:47.599 in the #777 D’Station Aston Martin.

The fastest of the guesting cars was the #71 Inception Racing Ferrari, Ben Barnicoat posting the 6th fastest time of the session, half a second back from Pera’s best.

In trouble during the session was the #47 Cetilar Racing Ferrari, the Championship front-runner bringing our a red flag just over half an hour into the session after an off into the armco for Roberto Lacorte, the car returning to the pits with seemingly minor front-end damage but not appearing for the remainder of the session.
