Kevin McGarrity’s Accident
An experienced, independent eye-witness forwards these observations on the accident to Kevin McGarrity in the Risi #34 Ferrari 360 during the Sebring 12 Hours, an incident that brought out the only full course caution of the race.

“A Bentley was catching two GT cars on the back straight, approaching Turn 17. The two GTs braked on their normal line, and drifted out towards the exit of the corner, as you would expect them to do. The Bentley passed the first car cleanly, and moved inside the Risi Ferrari, looking as though it would pass that cleanly too. The Speed 8 then hit the bump there, and briefly snapped sideways, accidentally ‘swiping’ the Ferrari. McGarrity applied some lock, but with the wall only 20 metres or so from his racing line, he had no chance saving the car.

“It’s a quick, fourth gear corner, and he piled hard into the wall, mercifully with relatively light injuries.

“It was a racing accident, not an aggressive move by the Bentley.”

Kevin McGarrity apparently could only identify the car as a prototype, his instant reaction being that he had been shoved off the track. We’re pleased to be able to clear up the sequence of events that led to this unfortunate incident. We also wish the Irishman a speedy return to racing.
