The FIA World Motor Sport Council announced today that is investigating a number of options for FIA labelled GT series following SRO Motorsports Group’s decision not to renew its contract with the FIA.
In Paris the FIA World Motor Sport Council ‘agreed to the principle of creating an FIA label which may be granted to various GT International Series, after a call of interest, upon payment of a specific licence fee and subject to compliance with a number of criteria, in order to move further towards standardisation of regulations in areas such as Balance of Performance, application of the list of FIA Drivers’ categorisation and sporting and technical regulations.’
In interesting statement as the number of international GT series is limited and SRO promotes a number of them. A potential candidate for securing the FIA label would be International GT Open. The championship is already an FIA Authorised International Series and for 2014 a change in regulations sees GTE, GT2 and modified GT3 cars competing against each other in the Super GT class. This is pretty much in line with the FIA GT convergence plans.
The FIA World Motor Sport Council also announced that an FIA GT World Cup may be created. The World Cup, which would be a single event, would be open for top teams and drivers of each FIA labelled international series. Whether this will result in a rival for the Baku World Challenge at the end of the season or a rival event is yet to be seen. The FIA has announced detailed proposals will be presented at the next World Motor Sport Council meeting.
