Now here’s a talking point post a rather soggy Le Mans Test Day.
The LMP2 front runners, with little dry running, a very ‘green’ and dirty track and a headwind (as opposed to 2014’s tailwind) down the Mulsanne straight posted times around five seconds slower than last year here.
The GTE numbers are not dissimilar and though a little closer to the Test Day times from last year, there was a similar five-second chasm to the 2014 pole times.
Then we come to LMP1, where Brendon Hartley’s time in the early part of the afternoon session beat the pole position time from last year, with the second Porsche within half a second of the 2014 pole time and two Audis less than a second shy of that mark.
Factoring in the track conditions that left a c.five-second gap between 2014 and 2015 class times elsewhere, there looks to be a potentially massive potential leap to come in LMP1.
