After a tricky start to its soon to be two year history the Maxi Endurance 32 is due to return to the track at the Algarve circuit at Portimao.
November 21st sees the race start at 9am and the cars listed below will be hoping to take the checkered flag the following evening at 5pm.
The inaugural race welcomed about half as many cars as are promised to start the race this time out with other cars listed as potential entries, and a new initiative likely to see that additional total less of a fantasy than these things normally are!
Before we get too obsessed about grid numbers though it’s worth feeding back some of the thoughts of the entrants last year who all seemed to thoroughly enjoy the pace and the spirit of the event. Let’s be clear, this is not Le Mans, and it’s not the Spa 24 either, think more 100mph lads weekend away with prizes and then consider the whole thing differently. It’s defined, designed and conducted in pursuit of good, usually clean, sporting fun.
So with a month to go before things get underway it seems a good moment to catch up with the man behind the event Jesus Diez Villarroel:
“We’re very pleased with how things are coming along, and we’re delighted to be bringing the event back to Portico.
“As with everything new though there are challenges, challenges to get the message across about the spirit of the event, and about the cost of course.
“The reality is that with six drivers across the 32 hours the budget is around the same as for a 24 hour race. There’s even the additional bonus that the 32 hour race length gives teams that might have a problem longer to fix it and get back into the race.
“We believe that the timing is right too, there is not a lot of racing in Europe in November and it gives us the chance to show off a new racing experience on one of the nicest circuits in Europe.”
As with any and every race operating at this level, with four weeks to go there are still place available on the grid, and seats available in several cars.
“Of course, and there are still a couple of weeks for teams to decide to commit.
“We have added a second competition within the main race with trophies and a podium after 10% of the main race, 192 minutes.
“I hope that helps the main teams to get additional drivers and for some of those teams to run a second, or even a third, car. We may even get cars that commit to the 192 minutes and decide on reflection to continue to the end!”
