Twelve cars will line up on the Belgium starting grid representing five manufacturers this weekend at Spa in the new-for-2016 Michelin GT3 Le Mans Cup. Amongst the runners and riders entered, there’s one addition to the field, and two omissions from the last round at Paul Ricard. The penultimate round of the season though, should be competitive as the team’s and driver’s championships are still wide open, with only 15 points between the leader TF Sport and the second placed SMP Ferrari 488.
Not present for the trip to Belgium is the BMS Scuderia Italia Ferrari 458 which is only competing in select rounds, and the Optimum Motorsport Audi R8 after the team using the round at Ricard to test the series’ waters.
There is however one addition, with the Belgian-entered #90 Autoclub Excelsior Aston Martin Vantage GT3. The car is set to have a pair of Belgians driving; Tim Verbergt who competed in the Spa rounds of the British GT and GT Open in recent years and Michael Schmetz who has limited experience driving in the Blancpain Endurance Series.
The only other change to the entry list is a driver change in the #88 Mentos Racing Porsche. The weekend’s meeting will see the return of Klaus Bachler, who was forced to miss the race in Le Castellet due to another commitment. He will drive alongside Norway’s Egidio Perfetti who is third in the Drivers Championship after scoring three podiums in a row in Le Mans, the Red Bull Ring and Le Castellet.
Action will start on Friday 23 of September with two free practice sessions, followed by the qualifying on Saturday at 11:55. The green flag will be wave the same day at 17:30 for the 2-hour race.
