Car designer Giorgio Lucchini passed away last Friday, the 78 year old leaves behind him a legacy of small prototype design that is still scoring racing victories to this day.
With thanks to the obituary for Lucchini in La Gazzeta Di Mantova, we can report that his designs have scored two world titles, 34 GT Italia titles, 4 hillclimb titles, over 750 victories in total. Perhaps appropriately a pair of Lucchinis raced in the Italian Prototype Championship on the day following their designer’s passing.
Lucchini turned out over 150 cars ranging from small CN prototypes up to and including SR2 and latterly LMP2 spec cars.
There were some major highlights, a Lucchini SR2 winning overall against strong SR1 opposition (including DAMS Cadillac and Ferrari 333SP) at a streaming wet Spa in 2000 (above) and a class win at Le Mans in 1993 (below).
Lucchini left the racing scene after the disappointment of rejection at Le Mans scrutineering in 2008 over an homologation issue for the Racing Box entered LMP2 (though the car stayed in Le mans Series action the following year – see lead picture) and thereafter designed ultralight aircraft.
