Advantage Alpine As Two-Horse LMP2 Title Race Heads To China

RGR's title hopes slim with 12 hours of racing left in 2016

With the races at Shanghai and Bahrain still to go, it’s come down to two cars and crews in contention for the Teams and Drivers Championships in LMP2; the #36 Alpine and RGR Sport by Morand Ligier.

Thus far, the Alpine of Gustavo Menezes, Stephane Richelmi and Nicolas Lapierre has scored 171 points in both points tallies, however the RGR Sport Ligier has a marginal points difference between its current score in the Teams and Drivers Championships.

That difference comes as a result of the #45 Manor Oreca finishing ahead of the #43 at Spa, the car not registered for the full championship and therefore not eligible for team points, but all three drivers in the #45 gained points for the Drivers standings.

That leaves the #43 car on 136 points in the Teams Championship, whilst its drivers: Filipe Albuquerque, Ricardo Gonzalez and Bruno Senna sit on 133 in the Drivers race.

Realistically for any hope of either title going RGR Sport’s way, the Signatech Alpine crew must have two very bad days indeed, and in a season where it has not finished lower than fourth that seems like a highly unlikely scenario.

A second place in China would seal the title for the #36, whatever the #43 can produce, the same applies to both title races.
