RLR MSport has become the first team in the current ELMS-Le Mans Cup paddock to purchase a Ligier JS2.R for use in the 2020 Ligier European Series.
The British outfit, which currently competes in the Le Mans Cup and European Le Mans Series sees this move as an opportunity to create a ladder to Le Mans, beginning with the new-for-2020 ELMS-supporting Ligier one-make series (which features classes for the JS2.R and JS P4).
“We’re looking forward to bringing RLR MSport’s professionalism and experience in the top flights of sportscar racing to the new Ligier Endurance Series in 2020,” RLR MSport Director of motorsport operations, Nick Reynolds, said. “It’s a new challenge for us, but acquiring a Ligier JS2.R was an easy decision, as it reinforces our commitment to opening up the endurance world to drivers.
“Our Ligier Endurance Series entry will stand at the base of RLR MSport’s ladder to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. It’s a cost-effective launchpad for gentlemen drivers wishing to enjoy themselves on the best tracks in Europe, but also for young talents who wish to improve and learn how to operate as part of a professional racing team at the highest levels of motorsport.”
DSC understands that RLR Msport is not the only current ELMS/Le Mans Cup team to have committed to buying a car for the Ligier European Series. For the Ligier European Series’ inaugural season, the grid is expected to exceed 20 cars.
The JS2.R has become a popular platform for gentlemen drivers across Europe. Since it began production in 2018, 46 chassis have been sold for use as track day cars or for competition in the Ligier JS Cup France and now the Ligier European Series as well as other series such as the 24H Series which include a diverse class system.
The 2020 Ligier Endurance Series will commence at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya next April, before racing at Monza, Paul Ricard, Spa and Algarve. The entry process has already begun.
