The Porsche GT Team will not be participating in the seventh round of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship this weekend at Mid-Ohio.
The decision was taken in the wake of three positive Covid-19 tests that were confirmed during the 24 Hours of Le Mans last weekend.
That led to a decision not to send any team members who were in Le Mans to the Nürburgring 24 Hours this weekend affecting a number of customer teams and leading directly to the withdrawal of the Manthey Racing ‘Grello’ Porsche 911 GT3R.
The decision also affected the plans for Factory drivers Laurens Vanthoor, Frédéric Makowiecki and Nick Tandy to travel to the USA as all three competed in Le Mans.
As outlined in a separate story on DSC, the remaining full-season IMSA driver, Earl Bamber, who as not present at Le Mans, has been reallocated to join the KCMG effort at the N24
Porsche will be back in IMSA competition at Charlotte on 10 October.
“Based on yesterday’s decision that no employee or racing driver of our Le Mans team will participate in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, we have today decided that this ruling will also apply to the upcoming IWSC race in Mid-Ohio. This means that Laurens, Nick and Fred will not be travelling to the USA,” said Fritz Enzinger, Vice President Motorsport. “This is very regrettable, but we would like to emphasise that in this case as well the health of all those concerned is the prime focus of the decisions we have taken.”
