The Monday test post the ELMS season finale often throws up some interesting snippets and here’s another.
Proton Competition were present with two cars, one the #77 full-season WeatherTech-branded entry from the ELMS with Cooper MacNeil and Christian Reid joined by a Porsche factory driver at each race, and the other a seemingly brand new 911 GT3R, again in WeatherTech livery and with the regulatory green rear wing endplates that designate a GTD car in IMSA competition.
This seems therefore to confirm both that the WeatherTech Racing effort has, unsurprisingly, confirmed a return with Porsche, the programme again to be managed by Proton Competition, after the withdrawal of the GTLM class after the current season, and that a final decision has also been made for the team, confirmed to still see Cooper MacNeil anchor the effort, to compete in GTD rather than GTD Pro (which will feature red rear wing endplates).
That likely choice was reported by MacNeil to RACER.com after the decision to employ the same BoP for both the GTD Pro and GTD machines which are both based on FIA GT3-homologated machinery.
MacNeil was present for the Portimao test before returning to the USA ahead of Petit Le Mans which is expected to see a second GTLM Porsche entered by the team with an all Pro line-up for the final race in IMSA competition for the GTLM machines.
