2021 Asian Le Mans Series and European Le Mans Series Champion with G-Drive / Algarve Pro Racing and Team WRT respectively, Yifei Ye is set to join the ranks of Porsche’s factory drivers for 2022.
Ye tested at Portimao on Monday in Cool Racing’s Oreca 07, set to move up to the full LMP2 class in 2021 after contesting LMP2 Pro-Am this year.
Accompanying him at the test was Porsche Junior Coach Sascha Maassen with the Chinese driver later seen in the paddock area undertaking a brief photoshoot whilst wearing a Porsche factory race suit.
Ye became the first driver to win the overall Championship in both of the ACO’s regional Series in a single year and came within a lap of adding the LMP2 crown at the Le Mans 24 Hours to that tally, leading the race comfortably until a technical failure immobilised his WRT ORECA at Tertre Rouge on the final lap.
The move comes as Porsche is expected to confirm a number of changes to their factory driver line-up to accommodate preparation, testing and development of their planned FIA WEC and IMSA LMDH programmes for 2023.
