Catching Up With Multimatic’s Larry Holt: On Mustangs & LMDhs

And a very brief Audi update

Multimatic’s excellently characterful founder Larry Holt was on hand to support Ford Performance’s Mustang GT3 launch at Daytona and took time out to chat about a range of his company’s programmes in this its 30th anniversary year.

As with any conversation with Larry this interview is edited to remove the cussing that the Canadian has elevated to an art form!

“Our other major programme is amazing (design and build of the Porsche- Multimatic LMDH) as constructor – But we can’t race it and, as you know, I’m a racer. So here I am, back where I started, racing Mustangs!”

But it’s a very different Mustang?

“Yeah, it’s gonna be a very different Mustang. We did two GT3 Mustangs in the past. One of them was way ill-advised when the road car still had a stick axle.”

And there was the Marc VDS Mustang?

“The Marc VDS car was outrageous. It had a back end of an LMP on that car. That car could have been pretty good, but just didn’t have the development.”

So this is back to the beginning for you and for Multimatic?

“From a history perspective, this is our 30th anniversary.

“Our first racing year was 1992 in the Canadian Firehawk Championship and we raced a Ford Taurus SHL, which is a family sedan, with a hot rod motor in it. And we won that championship. So it has been Ford since the beginning. Probably 85% of of our racing has been with Ford.

‘In ’94 when the new Mustang came out we were the first guys to make a racecar. And that got a facelift in ’98 and we did a new version after that.

The next car was the FR 500C and we sold 60 of those. We sold loads of them!

“The next one was the Boss 302 which was really the same underpinnings to the FR 500 but in a different generation of the Mustang.

“Then the independent rear suspension car came in ’15 and we made the Shelby GT 350 RC. We only ran that for a couple of years and then we went to the current GT4 version. So that’s a lot of different Mustangs!”

We know you’re the busiest guy? But this last year or two just seems to have gone nuts?

“And that’s not all about racing. We’re doing the AMG 1 – it’s launching now and in fact we’ve just been on the phone all morning to Portimao where we’re testing right now. and that’s going well. So hopefully, in April, all the customers will start getting their cars.

“But it’s very hard to deal with a programme that goes a couple of years longer than you originally planned, because that has an impact on your resource planned of other things. So that’s been a challenge.

“Valkyrie, we built the tubs and the bodies for Aston Martin and now we’re doing the 002 car, a trackday version and that’s taken up a lot of time. So none of that’s racing for us!

“And then on top of that, LMDH with Porsche, and they are, correctly, a tough and demanding organisation!

“But we are on track and delivering to programme. It’s challenging, but yeah, we are delivering and we have delivered. Our worst delay was one week late on the first tub and since then we have been on the mark.”

And Audi?

“We’ve just made Audi’s first chassis.
