Gray Newell, driver of the #25 Heart of Racing Team Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT4, is awake and alert after a severe accident at the end of Sunday morning’s GT America series Race 2 at Road America.
A statement from SRO Motorsports Group America reads: “During race #2 of the GT America race at Road America, car #25, the Heart of Racing Aston Martin driven by Gray Newell was involved in a multi-car incident.”
“Newell was awake and alert when evaluated at the infield medical care center, before being transferred to the local hospital for standard post-incident evaluation.”
The accident happened in the final minutes of the GT America race as Newell was battling for a podium position in the GT4 class. As a Full Course Yellow was displayed, Newell crashed at full speed into the concrete barriers along the left side of the front stretch, just past the start/finish line.
Debris from the crash blocked the track, and brought the race to an early end.
George Kurtz was declared the winner in the SRO3 class, his #04 CrowdStrike with Riley Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 scored its sixth win of the season. Kurtz held off Race 1 winner Andy Pilgrim (#56 SKI Autosport Ferrari 458 Italia GT3) in a spirited battle for the top spot. Mirco Schultis (#70 MISHUmotors Callaway Corvette C7 GT3-R) finished third.
Elias Sabo in the #8 Flying Lizard Motorsports Vantage GT4 was declared the winner in the GT4 class. Newell is provisionally credited with a second place finish, ahead of the #016 Hattori Motorsports Toyota GR Supra GT4 of Seth Lucas.
