Cadillac factory driver Alex Lynn has been added to Corvette GT3 customer team AWA’s driver line-up for its first IMSA GTD race with the Z06 GT3.R in January at Daytona.
Lynn will share the team’s #13 Corvette with Orey Fidani, Matt Bell, and Lars Kern in the GTD class, for what will be his first run in GTD at the Rolex 24 Hours.
“Christie (Bagne) from Corvette asked me if I wanted to do Daytona, and the answer was of course ‘yes!’,” Lynn told DSC. “GTD at Daytona looks stacked with a lot of heavy-hitting line-ups and a lot of new cars, so it will be such an intense race that I don’t want to miss.
“All of us in the WEC Hypercar programme would have loved to be at the race with our Cadillac, and there was talk of us competing. As that didn’t happen being able to return to Daytona with a car within the GM family was my next priority.”
Lynn added that in an ideal world, he would like to compete in both Hypercar and GT3 racing more regularly in the future.
“I’d love to do a bit of both. I really enjoy both. I feel I am a versatile driver, whether that was doing Formula E and GTE Pro at the same time in the past, as well as prototypes when I started in sportscar racing. So combining a prototype and GT programme is something I’ve always wanted to do.
“When you’re with a brand like GM there’s always the chance to do both,” he continued. “There is a desire to get the Z06 GT3.R racing in Europe, that’s something I’d love to be a part of.”
In addition to being his first GTD start at the Rolex 24, this drive with AWA will also be his first race in a Corvette.
Because of this, Lynn will get some additional track time in with AWA to prepare for the race at a multi-day Daytona test in mid-December, before rejoining the team in January for the Roar before the Rolex 24.
“I’m expecting the Z06 to be a high-level GT3 car,” Lynn said ahead of the test. “GT3 has stepped up massively in recent years and from what I have seen and what I hear, the new Corvette is a really good race car. Pratt Miller always do a cracking job when they work with Corvette on a new car, so I’m excited to see what it’s like behind the wheel.
“My first meeting with the team will come next month, and I will leave no stone unturned. I will make the most of this chance.
“AWA is a Daytona winner, and that’s something I want to achieve.”
