Corvette dominates final GTLM season, Ferrari sweeps WEC and ELMS titles
Though the pandemic was still disrupting everyday life for large swathes of the globe in 2021, motorsport was beginning to find its feet again, with crowds returning to races and restrictions on travel easing.
In IMSA, the 2021 season was the swansong for GTLM, with Corvette Racing’s C8.Rs and the private WeatherTech Racing Porsche the only cars in the category to take on a full-season programme.
BMW Team RLL joined that trio for the endurance races, which also doubled the final four appearances for the M8 GTLM globally. The only other cars that took part were Risi’s Ferrari 488 at Daytona and a second WeatherTech Porsche which made a one-off appearance at Petit Le Mans.
The title went to Antonio Garcia and Jordan Taylor, after a campaign which saw Corvette win all but three of the races. WeatherTech Racing ended up with three victories, and Risi and RLL finished the season without one.
Elsewhere, with the WEC schedule reverting to its traditional format, AF Corse’s Alessandro Pier Guidi and James Calado were crowned GTE Pro champions, and won Le Mans with Come Ledogar as the third driver in their #51 Ferrari.
AF Corse also ended up as a double champion, with Nicklas Nielsen, Francois Perrodo and Alessio Rovera sealing the Am honours too.
Meanwhile, in the ELMS, adding to Ferrari’s list of accolades, Iron Lynx’s Ferrari of Matteo Cressoni, Miguel Molina and Rino Mastronardi proved to be the class of the LMGTE field. Wins at Barcelona, Paul Ricard at Portimao and podiums in the other three races made for a comfortable ride.
