Corvette stars in the final year of the ALMS, Simonsen passes at Le Mans, Bruni crowned WEC champion

Unfortunately, the 2013 GTE season will forever be associated with the incident that claimed the life of Allan Simonsen, which occurred in the opening laps of the Le Mans 24 Hours.

It was, by far, the worst incident of the GTE era and a stark reminder that even with modern safety standards and technology, the sport still presents risk for the drivers behind the wheel. 10 years on, Simonsen is still sorely missed in the sportscar racing community, a true talent, taken too soon.

That weekend, the show went on, the 90th anniversary running of the 24 Hours eventually going the way of Porsche in GTE Pro class with its #92 911 RSR. IMSA Performance Matmut made it a double win for the German brand too, as Raymond Narac, Christophe Bourret and Jean-Karl Vernay stormed to victory in GTE Am.

Over the course of the 2013 WEC season though, Le Mans was the only victory, and podium, for the #92’s full-season duo of Marc Lieb and Richard Lietz, who finished third in the GT Drivers standings. The title instead would go the way of Gianmaria Bruni, the only full-season driver in the #51 AF Corse Ferrari, with wins at Spa, Sao Paulo and Bahrain. Ferrari took the Manufacturers crown too due to the #51’s performances during the season.

GTE Am also saw a Ferrari beat an Aston Martin to the title, with American-flagged 8 Star Motorsports the most consistent team throughout the season.

In the ELMS, a Ferrari 458 Italia won the championship too, with Ram Racing’s #52 example of Matt Griffin and Johnny Mowlem winning three of the five races.

Meanwhile, in North America, the final American Le Mans Series season was dominated in the GT class by Corvette Racing, which had the upper hand on the field which included an array of high-quality BMW, SRT, Ferrari and Porsche entries.

Corvette claimed five wins during the season, which would end with Antonio Garcia and Jan Magnussen crowned champions. Their teammates in the #4 would win Sebring, while Porsche customer Team Falken Tire scored a famous victory at Road Atlanta with Bryan Sellers, Wolf Henzler and Nick Tandy.
