A selection of hydrogen-powered prototypes are set to run at the Circuit de la Sarthe in the build up to the 2024 Le Mans 24 Hours in June.
On Saturday the 15th, before the start of the 92nd edition of the 24 Hours, several hydrogen-powered prototypes, including the H24 from MissionH24’s, will take to the circuit in front of the sellout crowd.
While the remaining cars entered are yet to be revealed, the ACO has outlined the format for the demo. Cars “using fuel cells and hydrogen combustion engines, will evolve at a sustained pace” between 12 and 1pm, it says.
This follows on from the significant presence that hydrogen technology had at the 2023 edition of the Le Mans 24 Hours.
That included a dedicated Hydrogen Village in the infield fan zone, car reveals from Toyota (GR H2 Racing Concept), Solution F (Foenix H2) and Ligier (JS2 RH2) as well as a demonstration lap from MissionH24 LMPH2G’s ahead of the centenary race.
The ACO and FIA are currently working on a new ruleset for hydrogen technology that will allow manufacturers to compete in the FIA WEC and at the Le Mans 24 Hours in the future, competing for overall wins. The target for the debut of a hydrogen race cars is currently 2027.
