Johnny Laursen, owner of Danish LMGT3 team Formula Racing is set to compete at the Le Mans 24 Hours this year, replacing Duncan Cameron in Spirit of Race’s #155 Ferrari 296 GT3 on the entry list for the French endurance classic.
This development, Formula Racing says, has come as a surprise to the team, which was originally placed fifth on the reserve list with its #52 Ferrari 296.
“This is huge news, and it comes a bit unexpectedly, as we have been on standby on the reserve list,” said team manager Allan Jørgensen.
“Le Mans is the world’s biggest motorsport event and a race that all sports car teams dream of winning, including us.
We are proud and very excited to be on the start list for the second time in our history.”
Laursen looks set to be joined by his 17-year-old son Conrad Laursen, and a yet-to-be-announced third driver.
Currently, Father and son Laursen compete under the Formula Racing banner in the new ELMS LMGT3 class.
The team claimed victory in the opening round of the season in Barcelona where Johnny and Conrad Laursen, along with Ferrari factory driver Nicklas Nielsen, enjoyed a standout performance.
“We are proud to have the chance to participate again at Le Mans for the second time, which this year begins a new era with GT3 cars.
We have already made a strong impression among the world’s elite in the ELMS, and with the setup we have developed.
I definitely believe that we have the skills to make our presence felt at Le Mans as well,” adds Johnny Laursen.
The original version of this story followed an incorrect release from Formula Racing which stated that the Spirit of Race LMGT3 entry had been taken over by Formula Racing – That is not permitted under the entry rules for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
