Whilst there’s a strong debate about whether this is a golden era in sportscar racing, there’s little doubt that one of its forebears in that debate was the original GT1 era from the mid-late 1990s with some extraordinary racing GT cars, and, in many cases, some either unique, or very limited production, roadgoing versions.
The astonishing Louwman Museum in Den Haag (The Hague), Netherlands, has a Summer exhibition with a carefully curated selection of 1990s ‘Hypercars’ which is well worth a visit.
The ‘Supercars of the ’90s’ exhibition includes a number of stunning cars including the only ‘roadgoing’ version of Toyota’s 1998 TS020 (GT One), a Porsche 911 GT1 98 (pictured top) and Erik Comas’s immaculately restored and now road-registered Nissan R380!
There’s an example of the super exclusive Mercedes CLK GTR Strassenversion too, one of only 28 ever built.
And there are roadgoing versions too of a selection of other cars with rather limited motorsport heritage including the Bugatti EB110 and the less well known but equally bonkers Vector W8, a car that never raced, though its successor M12 did have a limited (in both numerical and success terms) GT racing career.
It’s all presented in a super accessible format in the Museum’s stunning surroundings.
