Jamie Day Puts Aston Martin On Top In FP2

19-year-old Rookie tops Bronze only session for Volante Rosso Motorsport

Jamie Day has topped the second practice session at Mount Panorama, with the 19-year-old Aston Martin Academy Graduate logging a 2:05.1060 to put the #14 Volante Rosso Motorsport Aston Martin quickest on the timing screens.

Day completed his lap with 10 minutes still to go in the session, with Kenny Habul chipping away in the #75 SunEnergy1 Mercedes to go into second, improving all the way to a 2:06.06 to sit second. Third was Yasser Shahin in the #91 Shell/The Bend Manthey EMA Porsche, on a 2:07.19.

“It’s immense, to be honest, my first ever time driving it and there’s no track quite like it,” the 19-year-old Emirati said.

“Honestly, we’re just sharing it, and then every time we come out we just share as much as we can and give as constructive feedback as possible to the team all at once, and hopefully by Sunday, we can be right up there.

“We’ve all been very similar [with car feedback], myself and Mateo are a little bit more experienced with the car, Jaylyn has a bit more experience with the track.

“We’re putting it all together and every time we’re going out there we just try and help out and push to be at the front.”

The track surface was slippery after a huge engine failure in a support category coated the Chase in oil, which required significant cleanup and left a large amount of absorbent on the circuit. As the track cleaned up, drivers were able to be more confident and the lap times improved. The session ran once again without incident.

Missing the session entirely was the #183 Jamec Racing Audi, with the issue noted in Practice 1 requiring a full gearbox change. A team representative told DSC that an issue was reported on the upshift between 5th and 6th gear, with the car not getting out on track for FP2.

Making it to the track however was the #19 Team 19 Mercedes GT4, which underwent a front splitter repair job mid-session, and finished as the top GT4 runner.

Practice 3 for the Bathurst 12 Hour is at 1:45pm Local, for all runners, with Practice 4 for Bronze drivers only finishing off the day at 4:30pm.
