Most of GT America powered by AWS’ Race 2 at Sonoma was spent under the control of the Safety Car, but a win was still a win for Kyle Washington and the #32 GMG Porsche 992 GT3 R.
Washington won a rain-shortened race Sunday morning ahead of the #29 Turner Motorsport BMW M4 GT3 EVO of Justin Rothberg in second, and the #70 MISHUMotors Callaway Corvette C7 GT3-R of Mirco Schultis in third.
Thanks to a skillful dash from third to first in the rare green flag running provided, Max Hewitt in the #39 Van der Steur Racing Aston Martin Vantage GT4 ‘EVO’ won the GT4 class ahead of Race 1 winner Anthony McIntosh’s #69 JTR Motorsports Engineering Toyota GR Supra GT4 EVO2, and Matt Travis’ #47 NOLASPORT Porsche 718 Cayman GT4.
With persistent rain and lots of standing water on track, the first green flag lap of the race completely tore up the form book. Race 1 winner George Kurtz spun in the Esses, throwing away a two-second lead over the SRO3 field – and allowed Washington to move into the lead.
Some SRO3 drivers struggled to keep GT4 cars behind them and it culminated in a stack-up at the start/finish line. Elias Sabo’s #8 Flying Lizard BMW spun around, and Ross Chouest’s #50 Chouest Povoledo Racing Corvette spun and hit the wall.
The race was green for only a few seconds before Sabo spun around again coming to take the restart – then, the #7 ACI Motorsports Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 of Curt Swearingin and the #188 Fast Track Racing BMW M4 GT4 of Denny Stripling crashed into the tyre barriers at turn ten to bring the Safety Car out again.
The chequered flag eventually came down seven minutes before the advertised 40-minute distance.
