With an entry down to just 8 cars for the double header race weekend at Zandvoort, the GT2 European Series is clearly in need of a boost before the races at Spa
Race 1
Philippe Prette scored a brilliant overall win in today’s GT2 European Series powered by Pirelli race at Zandvoort, holding off the chasing Stefan Rosina to triumph by less than a second.
The reigning Am class champion took the start from outright pole after a stellar display in the first segment of qualifying, though a crash during the second phase required his LP Racing squad to carry out pre-race repairs to the #1 Maserati.
Their work was thoroughly rewarded by Prette’s display during the opening stint, which saw the Maserati man pull clear of Pro-Am leader Bronek Formanek (#11 Micanek Motorsport powered by Buggyra Lamborghini) by more than a second a lap. A class win appeared secure by the time Prette made his mid-race pit stop; the question now was whether he could claim a first outright victory.
The main opposition came from the #11 Lamborghini, which Formanek had handed over to Rosina. The Slovakian ace lived up to his formidable reputation by quickly overcoming his crew’s 10 seconds of compensation time from Circuit Paul Ricard and reducing Prette’s advantage, building towards a grandstand finish.
Prette had served no compensation time and used the buffer to manage his tyres for much of the second stint. With victory on the line, he was able to push a little harder during the final laps. This gave him just enough to hold on, making Prette the first Am driver to win overall since Elia Erhart triumphed at Red Bull Ring in 2022 with the same outfit. Rosina brought the #11 Lamborghini home for the Pro-Am win, the squad’s third from as many races.
The #7 DINAMIC Motorsport Maserati finished third on the road and second in Pro-Am after strong performances from both of its drivers. Roberto Pampanini made a decisive move on Alberto De Martin (#115 NM Racing Team Mercedes-AMG) after 20 minutes, but his good work was undone by a delay during the pit stop. Calamia took the controls and set off on a charge, ultimately passing the #115 Mercedes-AMG – now driven by Nil Montserrat –– with 10 minutes left on the clock.
Mato Homola also passed the Spaniard to put the #89 RTR Projects KTM third in Pro-Am. Like the #1 Maserati, this car also required repairs after Laura Kraihamer crashed in qualifying. It was ready just in time, and the Austrian driver delivered an excellent stint. After handing over to Homola, Kraihamer was quick to thank her team for their efforts.
The #294 RTR Projects Mercedes-AMG was second in the Am class, followed by the #53 Akkodis ASP Mercedes-AMG.
Race 2
Roberto Pampanini and Mauro Calamia earned their first GT2 European Series powered by Pirelli win of 2025 on Sunday morning, edging a close fight for Pro-Am honours in the weekend’s second race at Zandvoort.
The DINAMIC Motorsport Maserati spent the majority of the 60-minute contest in second spot, though the black and gold car was never far from the leading Mičánek Motorsport powered by Buggyra Lamborghini. Stefan Rosina led the opening stint from pole, while Calamia made a good start to move from third on the grid to run P2 as the field negotiated the opening sequence of corners.
Rosina quickly established an advantage at the head of the order and looked as though he might be able to negate the compensation time accrued from winning yesterday’s race. But as the stint progressed Calamia began to match his rival, preventing the Slovakian ace from escaping entirely.
The leading duo both made their mandatory stops at the end of the mid-race pit window. It was close, but the Lamborghini narrowly maintained its advantage over the Maserati, despite the Pampanini/Calamia car serving three seconds less compensation time.
Pampanini set about making the move on the circuit. He stalked Bronek Formanek throughout the second half of the race, but the Maserati was not able to get close enough to the Lamborghini on the long start-finish straight.
His chance finally came with a little over two minutes remaining, when the leaders encountered lapped traffic as they crossed the start-finish line. Pampanini used this opportunity to slip up the inside of Formanek and completed a tidy pass under braking for Tarzan.
Just two laps later the Maserati took the chequered flag, scoring the second GT2 Europe win for the DINAMIC duo following last year’s breakthrough triumph in Barcelona. Formanek and Rosina finished second, with the NM Racing Team Mercedes-AMG claiming third in Pro-Am.
Philippe Prette completed a sweep of the Am class at the wheel of the #1 LP Racing Maserati. Having won yesterday’s race outright, the Italian delivered another peerless showing to finish third on the road and more than a minute clear of his nearest rivals.
The Akkodis ASP Mercedes-AMG claimed the runner-up spot. Christophe Bourret ran the first stint before handing over to Pascal Gibon, who was among the quickest drivers on the track during the second phase of the race. He made a last-lap pass on the RTR Projects Mercedes-AMG of Petr Lisa and Ondrej Rokos to seal second spot.
The GT2 European Series powered by Pirelli returns on the final weekend in June when it runs in support of the 77th CrowdStrike 24 Hours of Spa from 26–29 June.
