Pfaff Ready To Race With Backup Car

Lamborghini and Forte Racing come to the rescue!

Less than 24 hours after a major accident in final practice, Pfaff Motorsports is ready to race today at Road America with a backup Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO2.

A side-by-side collision near pit entry between Pfaff’s Marco Mapelli and the ORECA LMP2 of Benjamin Pedersen (PR1 Mathiasen Motorsports) sent the plaid #9 Lamborghini spinning into the concrete barriers.

The hit against the barriers inflicted terminal damage to “Giulia”, the Huracán that Pfaff received in December when the team became a Lamborghini customer for the first time. The chassis was broken at the right rear, and the gearbox and engine were also damaged beyond repair upon further assessment.

Soon after, Lamborghini arranged for fellow Squadra Corse customer team Forte Racing to lend Pfaff its backup car, which was on-site at Road America. (Wayne Taylor Racing also offered assistance, though its spare car was still at the WTR shop near Indianapolis.)

Pfaff’s mechanics spent until 11:47 PM local time assembling and wrapping the backup car – nicknamed “Bonnie” – in its signature plaid livery.

“Bonnie” did not get a chance to do a hardship lap this morning, but the car has passed technical inspection and will have the opportunity to roll off from tenth on the grid in GTD PRO.
