The FIA WEC’s 100th Race: The Journey By The Numbers, Part 4

76-100

It’s the final part of DSC’s retrospective count from 1-100 to commemorate this weekend’s 100th WEC race.

76

A well-known number in endurance racing circles pre-WEC as the preferred identity of IMSA Performance Matmut, for Raymond Narac.

Raymond came to the WEC for just a single full season, in 2013, finishing third in the GTE Am points thanks to a class win at Le Mans for his full-season partner, Narac’s Jean Karl Vernay, and Christophe Bourret.

Notably, the effort would be Vernay’s last WEC effort before returning in 2024 with the Isotta Fraschini Hypercar programme, the longest full-season sabbatical in WEC history!

77

An almost ever-present WEC number for Proton Competition, missing only two seasons in the Championship’s history, has featured on a GTE Pro Porsche, multiple GTE AM Porsche’s and now on an LM GT3 Ford Mustang GT3.

#77 has a WEC era class win (plus two second places) at LeMans, two GTE Pro WEC race wins,  and nine other WEC class wins on its scorecard.

78

The #78 LMGT3 Lexus RCF GT3 of Akkodis ASP scored the brand’s first-ever pole position in WEC competition at Spa in 2025.

79

After hosting the very first FIA WEC, Sebring passed into the championship’s history books after hosting its 79th in 2023. The organisers decided that a Friday race was tough to promote and opted instead to return to the Circuit of the Americas for their US round thereafter.

79 was also the points score for both Toyota TS040s. In the season after taking its first World Championship, the Japanese marque was outclassed by both Porsche and Audi the following season.

80

The FIA WEC’s Virtual Safety Car and Full Course Yellow procedures mandate that on-track speeds must not exceed 80 km/h.

81

TF Sport’s #81 Corvette Z06 GT3.R in the hands of Tom van Rumpoy set the very first WEC LMGT3 pole position at Qatar in 2023.

82

BMW’s first WEC podium came in the Super Season of 2018/2019 with a second place for the #82 BMW Team MTEK M8 GTE of Antonio Felix da Costa and Tom Blomqvist.

83

From 2015 through to 2022 (with a two-season exception when he drove in LMP2 with TDS Racing), Francois Perrodo drove with AF Corse in LMGTE Am, then in 2022 in LMP2 Pro-Am, taking a race win in 2015 and then taking titles in all four seasons with AF Corse, three in GTE Am and then the 2022 LMP2 Pro-Am title.

The same period also saw two Le Mans class wins and 11 additional WEC class wins.

With the end of LMP2 in the WEC, Perrodo switched to the European LMS, but the #83 continued to live on in the WEC. According to AF Corse Team Manager Batti Pregliasco, the number “claimed by the team until there’s a class that Francois can take it up again with.”

Instead, the number now graces AF Corse’s privately entered Ferrari 499P Hypercar, which took an overall race win last season at CoTA and then secured the overall win at Le Mans in 2025.

84

Not a full-season WEC entry, but the #84 holds an important part in the sport’s history.

It was the number carried for the ‘SRT41’ Garage 56 efforts at Le Mans for quadruple amputee Frederic Sausset. His first effort in 2016 in an adapted Morgan Pescarolo LMP2 car became the first Garage 56 effort to complete the Le Mans 24 Hours.

Sausset went on to establish an academy effort for mobility-impaired drivers and, after a COVID-induced delay, the Oreca 07 car was fielded at Le Mans in 2021  and again posted a race finish.

85

The number that has identified the all-female Iron Dames effort in the FIA WEC since their debut in 2021.

A first Pole position and podium came the following season at Monza, with 2023 seeing the team second in the GTE Am standings and scoring the final ever GTE win at Bahrain.

86

#86 was the long-time WEC number for Mike Wainwright’s Gulf, later GR Racing team. Its long-term tenure eventually fell victim to Porsche’s decision to grant its pair of LMGT3 entries to Manthey Racing.

GR Racing now races a Ferrari in the ELMS, where it is currently contesting the LMGT3 title!

87

Hot on the heels of the first Pole position for the Lexus brand at Spa came the first win in the WEC for the marque, this time with Akkodis ASP’s other RCF GT3, the #87 of Clemens Schmid, Petru Umbrasescu, and Jose Maria Lopez at Interlagos in 2025.

88

Another of Proton Competition’s very regular numbers, host to a huge number of drivers in its WEC career with Porsche until 2024 and then with the Ford Mustang LMGT3.

#88 has finished on the Le Mans class podium three times in the WEC era, twice with Porsche, including a third-place finish for a crew that included Patrick Dempsey, and in 2024, with the Mustang.

There were six GTE AM class wins in the Porsche GTE years.

89

It’s another record for Sebastian Buemi, who raced at 89 consecutive WEC events before missing Spa this year on Formula E duty.

That total surpassed Christian Ried’s 85 consecutive race appearances, which ended with his ‘retirement’ at the end of 2023.

Since then, though, he has returned as a ‘super-sub’ both for his own Proton Competition Ford Mustang effort and, in 2025, aboard an Iron Lynx Mercedes AMG GT3 for a couple of races apiece, extending his overall total of starts to 89.

90

Simply the number of minutes for both Free Practice 1 and/or Free Practice 2 at a standard FIA WEC race meeting before a 60-minute FP3.

91

A regular Porsche WEC number, #91 adorned the Porsche 911 RSR-19 that scored the last GTE Pro Le Mans win in 2022 for Gianmaria Bruni, Richard Lietz, and Frederic Makowiecki, and the first in LMGT3 in 2024 for Manthey EMA with Richard Lietz (again!), Yasser Shahin, and Morris Shuring.

Also, at 91, at least until the start of the race at Fuji this weekend, is the record for race starts in the FIA WEC, another accolade for Sebastien Buemi!

92

The #92 Manthey PureRxcing Porsche 911 GT3R of Alex Malykhin, Joel Sturm, and Klaus Bachler claimed the first WEC LM GT3 title in 2024, also scoring the first race wins and the first title for a Lithuanian-entered team!

93

The 2025 24 Hours of Le Mans was the 93rd running of the world’s greatest endurance race.

94

Nico Muller, Loic Duval, and Gustavo Menezes scored the first-ever WEC points for Peugeot in their #94 Peugeot 9X8 on its racing debut at Monza in 2022 with a fourth-place finish.

95

#95 was a long-time Aston Martin Racing number in the GTE days.

2016 saw Nicki Thiim and Marco Sorensen, the infamous ‘Dane Train’, take the GTE Pro title, two years after fellow Danes David Heinemeier Hansson and Kristian Poulsen had claimed the GTE AM title, again in #95, and, together with Thiim, took the class win at Le Mans.

And in the extended 2019/20 season, the #95 took the GTE Pro title again, Thiim and Sorensen again the Champs.

Into the modern LMGT3 era, and #95 made more history last time out with the first-ever FIA WEC class win for McLaren, going to the #95 United Autosports GT3 Evo of Marino Sato, Darren Leung, and Sean Gelael.

96

The biggest gap in the manufacturers’ Championship in WEC history came in the 16-month 2019/20 Championship, Toyota’s 241 points overwhelming Rebellion on 145.

97

Another regular number for Aston Martin Racing in their GTE campaigns, the #97 is notable for adorning two GTE Pro Le Mans-winning cars. In 2017, the famous finish with Johnny Adam getting the better of a tyre-hampered Jordan Taylor and taking the win together with Darren Turner and Daniel Serra.

And then in 2020, with Alex Lynn, Maxime Martin, and Harry Tincknell.

98

A third and final regular number for Aston Martin Racing, the number was synonymous with one driver, Canadian gentleman racer Paul Dalla Lana.

From 2013 through to the start of 2022, Dalla Lana was close to an ever-present, taking 17 class wins and the GTE AM Championship in 2017, finishing as runner-up on two other occasions.

Despite the triumphs, Dalla Lana will possibly be best remembered for his truly epically poor luck at Le Mans. In 10 starts, there was a single podium finish, one much delayed, not classified finish, and no fewer than five DNFs.

99

Michelin has shod every overall race winner in FIA WEC history and will therefore hit their own WEC centenary on Saturday!

100

That comes this weekend at Fuji!
